After several lights’ journey into the forest, a ghostly wisp of chimney smoke drew the Paladin to the Mage’s cottage. Stepping inside, she was met with a familiar smell of parchment, lavender, and woodsmoke. A fire roared in the hearth.
As the Mage tended to the fire, the flames danced celestially across the silver threaded galaxy embroidered on the divining cone perched atop their ancient head. The brilliant stars and moons twinkled as they did under the torchlight of the Phrontistery’s halls many orbits ago.
“Well, what have you for me, Sevelin?” the Mage asked.
“A mushroom, professor,” she responded after a pause. It had been a very long time since she last heard the Mage speak her name.
The Paladin gently untied the pouch from her belt and rolled the toadstool into the Mage’s hand. A hush crept over the room. Even the fire stopped crackling.
The Mage brought the specimen close to their ear as if to listen to a softly whispered secret.
“Where did you find this?” they queried hastily, turning the mushroom over to examine its gills under the hearth light.
“About a five lights’ journey on foot in the forest, to the West. It called to me as I gathered kindling and discovered it after following a curious green moss.” Sevelin paused, “ It’s a Lightbringer, isn’t it?”
“No!” the Mage snapped, “that’s..not....”
But before the Mage could finish their sentence, their eyes grew dark and distant. It was as if they were staring directly through the Paladin toward something far beyond. Suddenly the Mage’s arms went limp and the toadstool went tumbling toward the hearth. Sevelin dove for the specimen and caught it just before it was consumed by the flame. She opened her slightly singed hand to the relieving sight of a perfectly intact, uncooked fungus.
The Mage was now collapsed in the middle of the floor. The divining cone had slipped off their head, and now two of the smallest birds Sevelin had ever seen were flitting about the rafters.
The Mage had fallen into a trance. There would be no telling when they would return from this impromptu trip. Although Sevelin had nowhere to go, she knew she could not stay the night. As she crossed the threshold of the cottage and stepped into the brisk forest air, the weight of disappointment pressed upon her chest and pulled at her throat.
What could the Mage have possibly been about to tell her? How long would they be transfixed like that? As she turned to take one last look at the Mage’s abode before reentering the woods, one of the Mage’s birds emerged from behind the ivy enveloping the cottage’s front window and alighted upon the tip of her nose.
She stared cross-eyed in frozen fascination at the tiny winged thing that now hovered silently before her face. From its little beak hung an equally tiny scroll of parchment, tied with a shimmering silver thread. She took the scroll and unfurled it eagerly. In hastily scribbled emerald ink, it read simply: “Follow the butterflies.”
